Director, Editorial Operations

Panoply is looking for a Director, Editorial Operations to work in the fun and fast-paced new media environment of podcasting. You’ll be a pioneer; this newly formed position exists to transform and optimize every aspect of the editorial department’s operations, including: content, staffing, budget, process, and analytics. You will be a key leader in a new media organization. This is a senior-level position reporting to the CCO.

This job requires both a flair for organization and the creativity and flexibility to work in an evolving medium. You'll oversee the structure that allows prominent hosts, producers, writers, actors, and outside companies to work together to create and run award-winning audio programs.

Experience in broadcast, film, or podcast programming (journalism or entertainment) is a plus, but not a requirement.

After more than a decade of creating award-winning podcasts and developing a deep knowledge of the medium, the Slate Group launched Panoply, the premium podcast network of top publishers and thinkers. Panoply is a fast-paced, innovative podcasting company with two major focuses: (1) producing and monetizing compelling audio content like the number one hits Revisionist History from Malcolm Gladwell and The Message from GE Podcast Theater and (2) Megaphone, the premier technology platform for spoken word audio and a complete end-to-end solution for the distribution and monetization needs of enterprise audio publishers.

Key Responsibilities

Optimize Editorial Operations
  • Work with CCO, heads of production and managing producers to manage Panoply’s full editorial schedule
  • Develop a deep understanding of the Panoply brand and voice and use it to inform your strategy and day-to-day decisions; maintain brand integrity
  • Refine your understanding of laws, regulations and ethics in podcasting
  • Help the production team secure top-level hosts, producers, editors, writers, and production support, both staff and freelance, as needed
Lead a Team
  • Oversee and manage long term strategy and day-to-day operations for 25+ person editorial team, including several direct reports
  • Collaborate with Others
  • Liaise with tech, product, revenue, business, finance and marketing teams to gain a deep understanding of the work and goals throughout the company to effectively communicate developments to the editorial staff
  • Oversee the sharing and socializing of content, in collaboration with Marketing and PR
  • Keep HR up to date on staffing and personnel issues within the editorial department, work with HR to manage through them
  • Partner with Legal and Finance teams on contracts and agreements
  • Work with Finance to set budget, then manage spending and track/reconcile departmental budget for spending, hiring, freelance hiring, and T&E
Engage in Analysis
  • Take frequent deep dives in analytics and use the data to inform audience development strategy through editorial content
  • Track spending and work with managing producers to optimize freelance contributions and recommend pivots as needed to minimize spending and maximize value
  • Regularly survey producers, hosts (and sometimes subscribers and listeners) to communicate ideas for Megaphone product enhancements

  • You’re passionate about smart, cutting-edge, topical, thoughtful, high-performing audio content. Bonus points if you are already a consumer of Panoply content;
  • You are comfortable managing a large team (you manage down as well as you manage up);
  • Thrive in an extremely fast paced environment;
  • You’re a problem solver; you never raise a problem without potential solutions;
  • You’re business minded and thoughtful around finance and budgets;
  • You’re adept at creating Keynote or PowerPoint presentations that are short on unnecessary verbiage and strong on communicating key ideas in fun, succinct, and memorable ways;
  • You possess top-notch communication skills and are comfortable speaking and presenting in meetings both small and company-wide
  • You relish the challenge of pulling together different departments in tandem with executive leadership to reach singular goals
  • Unquestionable personal code of ethics and integrity
  • Familiarity with the podcast landscape is desirable; a willingness to learn the industry is essential
  • 5+ years’ experience in an operations or general management role, preferably in media
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four year college or equivalent
